The state of Western Australia is bounded by the Indian Ocean to the north and west and the Southern Ocean to the south; it borders the state of South Australia to the south-east and the Northern Territory to the north-east. Western Australia is Australia's largest state. Most of the population lives in the area around Perth, which is the state's capital and largest city, leaving the rest of the state sparsely populated.
