This design features the national flag of North Macedonia (formerly known just as Macedonia and officially known as the Republic of North Macedonia), which is a country in Southeast Europe. North Macedonia is a landlocked country bordering with Kosovo to the northwest, Serbia to the northeast, Bulgaria to the east, Greece to the south and Albania to the west. The country gained independence in 1991 as one of the successor states of Yugoslavia. Skopje is the capital and largest city of North Macedonia, and it is home to a quarter of the country's population; other major cities in North Macedonia are Bitola, Kumanovo, Prilep, Tetovo, Veles, Štip, Ohrid, Gostivar and Strumica.
