It is the only U.S. state located outside of North America; it is also the only island state. The state encompasses nearly the entire Hawaiian archipelago, which consists of 137 volcanic islands. The eight main islands are Niʻihau, Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Kahoʻolawe, Maui and Hawaiʻi, after which the state is named. The capital city of Hawaii state is Honolulu.
