Five Gourd Crest with Manji Watch
The family crest of Yoshida Shoin (Drawn on 2013/5/6) / Shoin tried to stow away on Perry's second expedition to Shimoda and was caught. When an American officer asked him his name, he allegedly gave the alias 'Urina Manji'. This is a play on the colloquial name 'Manji within a gourd' for this crest design, which refers to Shoin's family crest. (Reference: 'Family Crest Stories (Part 2)' by Niwa Kaji) / There are various theories about Shoin's alias, with other sources citing 'Kanouchi Manji' and 'Kuwanou Manji'.
