Five Gourd Crest with Five-Way Divided Manji Ceramic Tile

The family crest of Yoshida Shoin (Drawn on 2013/5/6). Shoin tried to stow away on Perry's second expedition to Shimoda and got caught. When an American officer asked him his name, he allegedly gave the alias 'Urinakam Manji'. This is a play on the popular name for this crest design, 'Manji within a gourd', i.e., Shoin's family crest. (Reference: 'One Hundred Stories about Family Crests (Part 2)' by Niwa Kaji). There are various theories about Shoin's alias; other names include Kanouchi Manji and Kuwanou Manji.
