Ferniehirst Castle – Kerr Clan Christmas Card

Ralph’s descendants became the Kerrs of Ferniehurst, the senior branch, and John’s family was known as the Kerrs of Cessford. As the borders became lawless and roiled in political turmoil, the landowners built fortifications and played the political game between England and Scotland. Ferniehirst Castle was constructed around 1470 on the road to Otterburn and Newcastle. The Kerrs were apparently good game players and managed to keep Ferniehurst, which has been in the Kerr family from the 14th century to today. In the 20th century, it was a youth hostel for about 50 years but has been converted back to a residence.
