The orangutan is the only great ape that survives in the wild outside of the African continent. Great apes are sometimes mistakenly referred to as monkeys. The word orangutan means "people of the forest." Hundreds of young orangutans (like the little female pictured here) are orphaned when their mothers are killed during the clearing of rain forest or stolen for the illegal pet trade. You can foster an orphaned orangutan at www.orangutan.org or make a donation of any size to help purchase rainforest land to be set aside as sanctuary areas.
