Mary and Her Son Flanked by Archangels, Apostles and a Saint. The Virgin Mary, Mother of God, as a Black Madonna is seated with the Christ Child Jesus on her lap. The child holds her chin in affection. This is the left half of a diptych. Ethiopia was the first country to adopt Christianity. Christianity dates to the first century AD in Ethiopia. This illuminated manuscript is from the late 15th century, Tegray, Ethiopia . Tempera on wood. From the collection of The Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore. Accession number 36.12
