Archangels Michael and Gabriel, Reproduction of original Ethiopian Art. Two large angels side by side, dressed in traditional ethnic woven fabrics painted in authentic African style dating the late 17th century Gondar, Ethiopia. Ethiopia was the first country to adopt Christianity. Christianity dates to the first century AD in Ethiopia, making it unique in the Sub-Sahara region of Africa. This illuminated manuscript is from the late 17th century, Gondar, Ethiopia, when that art was at its height of expression under the Solomonic emperor Fasilädäs, though Ethiopian Christian art can date much further back.
