EMT Emergency Medical Technician CHRISTMAS BIG RED ACRONYM MERRY CHRISTMAS - Celebrate Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Ambulance Technician are terms used in some countries to denote a healthcare provider of emergency medical services.[1] EMTs are clinicians, trained to respond quickly to emergency situations regarding medical issues, traumatic injuries and accident scenes. EMTs operate under the scope of practice as provided by their physician medical director. There are many levels of an EMT, the most common being an EMT-B (EMT-Basic). EMT-Bs are trained to assess a patient's condition, and to perform such emergency medical procedures as are needed to maintain a patent airway with adequate breathing and cardiovascular circulation until the patient can be transferred to an appropriate destination for advanced medical care or advanced life support arrives on scene of the emergency. Interventions include cardiopulmonary resuscitation, defibrillation, controlling severe external bleeding, preventing shock, childbirth, body immobilisation to prevent spinal damage, and splinting of bone fractures. EMTs are trained in BLS, or basic life support. If a patient requires more advanced care at a scene of an emergency or during an inter hospital transfer that is out of the scope of practice of the EMT-B, a Paramedic or RN may assist. A Paramedic, or EMT-P, is the highest level of EMT. A Paramedic is trained in ALS, or Advanced Life Support, and has the ability to administer a variety of medications to ease pain or treat a variety medical or traumatic conditions, manage childbirth and high risk emergency deliveries, start IVs/IOs, intubate, perform Cricothyrotomies, needle decompression, cardiac pacing, cardioversion and defibrillation, and interpret/correct EKG's to stabilise certain cardiac conditions.
