It is a member of the Eeltail Catfishes family and is native to Australia. It inhabits slow moving streams, lakes and ponds with fringing vegetation and sand or gravel bottoms. More abundant in lakes than in flowing water. It is a bottom feeder and feeds on insect larvae, prawns, crayfish, mollusks, and small fishes. It can reach a maximum length of 90 cm (35.4 in) and a maximum published weight of 6.8 kg (15 lbs).
