Early African American Poem A Hymn to the Evening Poster

Early African American Poem A Hymn to the Evening Poster

This poster has a poem by Phillis Wheatley (c. 1753 - 1784) titled A Hymn to the Evening. The poem describes a speaker's desire to take on the glow of evening so that she may show her love for God. Phillis was born in Africa, sold into slavery at the age of seven or eight and was enslaved by the Wheatley family of Boston. Unlike most slaves, she received an education and the family supported her interest in writing. She was the first African American to publish a book (in London), and figures like George Washington praised her work. Phillis was emancipated by the Wheatleys shortly after the publication of her book. She married a poor grocer, lost three children and died in poverty and obscurity at the age of 31.

I hung this in the stairwell of our house, near some other Renoir pictures. My daughter says it looks like she is looking at her when she walks up the stairs. it's called "The Excursionist", she is holding a walking stick. Renoir was an impressionist, I don't think this is an actual person. The finished framed picture arrived and looks better than the online pic - Beautiful!

Absolutely superb Art Deco poster. The colours are vibrant, sympathetic to the era and perfect for use. I framed it and hung above the entrance to my Art Deco inspired lounge room. Stunning! The print is precise, clear and of an excellent standard. It was cleverly packaged so there wasn’t a blemish or crease. Perfect!
