The Dutch Republic Lion (also known as States Lion) has a sheaf of arrows and a sword bar, taken from the crest of Charles V in his seal as "Lord of the Netherlands" and the sheaf of arrows as a symbol of unity. The arrows symbolise the seven provinces that made up the Republic, the sword the determination to defend their liberty, and the coronet their sovereignty.
