We need to eat healthy food so that we can run, jump, and play! To get that energy from food, we need to digest the food. Digestion starts in the mouth, when mashing teeth and saliva begin to break down food. Trace your finger along the parts of your tyke's shirt described below and talk about what happens to the food. oesophagus (blue) a stretchy tube that squeezes your food to your stomach. stomach (red) uses muscles and acid to break down the food into a liquidy mixture. small intestine (green) a LONG tube that breaks down food and absorbs, or soaks up, minerals, vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. "Juices" from the liver (pink), gallbladder (dark green), and pancreas (yellow) help with the breakdown. large intestine (purple) everything your body doesn't need travels here. There's one more chance to absorb nutrients and water and then out comes the waste - poop! Now your science tyke will be interested to know they can keep their digestive system working well by drinking a lot of water to help keep everything moving. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables ensures your digestive system has good material to absorb. Happy eating!
