Crater Lake of Southern Oregon Tapestry
Crater Lake is the water-filled caldera of a collapsed volcano, Mount Mazama. It's water comes from rain and snow alone, as there are no rivers flowing into or out of this lake. It's the deepest lake of the United States, nearing 2000 feet deep! It is famous for its blue colour and holding 2 islands inside of it: Wizard Island and Phantom Ship. Located in Klamath County, it is the main gem of the Crater Lake National Park.
Mount Mazama is dormant, but not extinct, which allows the lake to still have hydrothermal features along its floor!
The lake has spiritual significance for the Klamath Native American tribe. They view it as the sacred abode of the Great Spirit, and being formed after a fight between the god of the underworld and that of the sky.
