The Cooper's Hawk is a fast, agile and skilled hunter of small birds, often catching them in flight, at bird feeders and from nests. It is very similar looking to the Sharp-shinned Hawk except that the Cooper's is larger in size and bulk with thicker, heavier feet. In flight the Sharp-shinned Hawk appears to have a very small head with a short neck. This fine illustration of a Cooper's Hawk, formerly known as the Stanley's Hawk, was painted by John James Audubon in the early 1800's.
