The Ships Winged Arrow and Southern Cross In Boston Harbour by Fitz Henry Lane 1853 The clipper ship "Southern Cross" was built in 1851 and sailed from San Francisco to Hong Kong in a record 32 days. The Southern Cross was a medium clipper ship built in 1851 by E. and H.O. Briggs in South Boston for the shipping firm of Baker & Morrill. The clipper ship "Winged Arrow" was built in 1852 and sailed from New York to San Francisco in 89 days and 21 hours. The clipper ship Winged Arrow was owned by the Russian American Fur Company and played a role in the transfer of Alaska from Russia to the U.S. in December 1868. The ship transported 300 Russians from Sitka, Alaska to St. Petersburg, Russia.
