Claude Monet is painting a landscape on a painter's canvas in a meadow by the edge of a forest. His future second wife (Alice Hoschedé) is watching him paint. This impressionism painting was done in the "en plein air" style which means in the open air, meant to describe paintings created outside.
About the artist:
John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was the most successful portrait painter of his era. Sargent is usually not thought of as an Impressionism painter, but he sometimes used impressionistic techniques to great effect with his own version of the impressionist style.
