City - NY - A night out 1920 Invitation
Colourized photo from 1920
Original Title: Broadway, Palais Royal
Photographer: Bain News
Location: 1580 Broadway at 47th Street
This was the Palais Royal opened in 1913, in its day it was an exclusive club for this area. It was known for its A-Rank entertainment and high prices. All the patrons were required to wear evening clothes, which probably explains the stores on this same block. Everything from fur coats to shoes, suits, jewellery, and it looked like most of them had night hours.
They lasted for a good long while, closing sometime in the mid 1930's to 1940's, its a little fuzzy because it seems it became a number of clubs over the years. Around 1942 or so, it became the Latin Quarter, they had great entertainment, a chorus line that attracted tens of thousands of customers every year. But due to labour troubles it closed in the 1960's. The building remained vacant for a number of years. The owners made money by putting billboards on the sides of the building. It was finally torn down in the 1980's and the Renaissance Hotel sits there now.
That said, parts of this building still exists, if you know where to look, and that's at that little crown trim at the top of the building. Its under the giants signs they have there now.
A few fun facts, the cars parked, have parking lights on. When you park you leave the lights on the sides lit, its to help show others where you parked, used mostly on dark roads. But they were probably hard to light so they probably left them on. Also if you look carefully in the JL Marks window there is a small alien wearing a birthday hat. I don't know why its an alien, but it looks like one. Weird part is, this era wasn't known for that shaped alien. And finally this was a very long exposure, there are a few ghosts of were people stood for a moment, it was probably busier in its day.
