The 'Maruni Futatsubiki' (Two Banners Crest) or 'Hikiryō' crest originated from the curtain dyeing of the Genpei era. The military curtain used in battlefields was made by sewing five fabrics together, with the middle fabric dyed black, called 'nakaguro'. This is one 'Hikiryō'. The 'Futatsu Hikiryō' has the fabrics layered from top to bottom as white, black, white, black, and white... (omitted) However, there is no clear theory on what the 'Hikiryō' crest is designed to represent. (From 'Reading Family Crests' by Toshio Nosaka)
