From empresses to the poorest villagers, fans have been part of Chinese culture for thousands of years. In fengshui the fan is used to guide and redirect energy to the desired space. In this design, the fan is used symbolically to direct happiness to the newly wedded couple; hence the "Double Happiness" character painted on the fan. The Chinese character "Double Happiness" in gold colour spelled xi or "hsi" in Mandarin and pronounced "shuang-xi" is a well-known Chinese character used traditionally in Chinese wedding as a symbol of love, happiness, and luck for the newly wedded couple. The colour red is an auspicious as well as a popular colour in Chinese culture. It symbolises luck, happiness, and joy. The use of contemporary fonts completes the design.
