Château d'If Poster

Château d'If Poster

The Château d'If is a famous historical fortress located on a small island in the Mediterranean Sea, approximately 1.5 kilometres (0.93 miles) offshore from the city of Marseille, France. Its history is closely tied to its use as a fortress, prison, and its literary fame. Construction of the Château d'If began in 1524 during the reign of King Francis I of France. It was built as a defensive fortification to protect the city of Marseille and its harbour from maritime threats. The fortress features a distinctive three-story structure with a central keep and a fortified tower. Over the centuries, it served various military purposes and underwent several renovations. However, the Château d'If is most famous for its role as a prison. In the 17th century, it was repurposed as a state prison, primarily used to incarcerate political and religious prisoners. Perhaps the most famous inmate of the Château d'If was Edmond Dantès, the fictional protagonist of Alexandre Dumas' novel "The Count of Monte Cristo," who spent 14 years imprisoned there before escaping. The Château d'If continued to function as a prison until the mid-19th century, after which it was decommissioned and turned into a tourist attraction. Today, it is a popular destination for visitors, who can explore the historic fortress, the cells where prisoners were once held, and enjoy panoramic views of the Mediterranean. The Château d'If's historical significance and literary associations have made it an enduring symbol of both France's maritime history and its cultural heritage.

I hung this in the stairwell of our house, near some other Renoir pictures. My daughter says it looks like she is looking at her when she walks up the stairs. it's called "The Excursionist", she is holding a walking stick. Renoir was an impressionist, I don't think this is an actual person. The finished framed picture arrived and looks better than the online pic - Beautiful!

Absolutely superb Art Deco poster. The colours are vibrant, sympathetic to the era and perfect for use. I framed it and hung above the entrance to my Art Deco inspired lounge room. Stunning! The print is precise, clear and of an excellent standard. It was cleverly packaged so there wasn’t a blemish or crease. Perfect!
