In the Celtic Christian tradition of Ireland, it was combined with the Christian Cross, and became popular for monuments, architecture, jewellery, and other ornamentation, spreading the tradition far beyond Eire. Irish Catholic legend has it that the Celtic Cross was introduced by Saint Patrick while converting the pagan Irish by combining the symbol of Christianity with the symbol of the sun or moon.
