An Inter-Island ship docked at Huahine, French Polynesia evokes memories of the smell of diesel oil and copra, thwe flapping of sails in the wind, and the thrumming of engines down below. For many years, ships powered by sail or diesel formed the backbone of supply and trade among the islands and atolls of the South Pacific. As global warming progresses, the high islands will remain, but the atolls will disappear forever, taking with them a bygone era of traditional Polynesian life.
