Caribou Crossing, the original name of the village, came from the miners, who, twice a year, observed large herds of caribou that swam the narrows between Bennett and Nares lakes. In 1902, the name was changed to Carcross because the postal mail for the local school kept being redirected to Caribou Crossing in British Columbia and to the one in Alaska. For Inland Tlingit and Tagish people, Carcross was once a hunting and fishing camp.However, during the Klondike Gold Rush, it became a key stopover and supply centre. In 1900, the railroad was completed and Carcross became a major transportation hub. In Carcross you will find totem poles made of cedar because it is rot-resistant.
