Capitol Reef National Park, located in south-central Utah, is a striking landscape of colourful cliffs, towering monoliths, twisting canyons, and expansive desert vistas. The park takes its name from the white Navajo Sandstone domes that resemble the U.S. Capitol building and from the term “reef,” a nod to the formidable Waterpocket Fold — a nearly 100-mile-long wrinkle in the Earth’s crust that creates a natural barrier much like a coral reef at sea. This geologic feature, along with layers of red, orange, and cream-coloured rock, tells a dramatic story of millions of years of uplift, erosion, and sedimentation. Visitors can explore scenic drives, hike through narrow slot canyons, and admire the park’s vibrant rock formations under crystal-clear desert skies. Beyond its dramatic geology, Capitol Reef has a unique cultural history. The Fremont River runs through the park’s Fruita Historic District, where 19th- and early 20th-century Mormon settlers planted orchards that still flourish today. In season, visitors can pick apples, peaches, cherries, and other fruits from the park’s trees. Ancient petroglyphs carved by the Fremont Culture add another layer of history, offering a glimpse into life here nearly a thousand years ago. With fewer crowds than Utah’s more famous “Mighty Five” parks, Capitol Reef provides a quieter, more intimate desert experience — a place where you can wander beneath massive sandstone walls and feel the weight of both time and nature’s artistry.
