Candy canes are classic sweet treats which have long been associated with Christmas; according to European folklore, the origin of candy canes goes back to Cologne, Germany in the 17th century, when the choirmaster at the church had the brilliant idea of giving candy to children to keep them quiet during the Christmas Eve service. Apparently the candy sticks were given hooks to resemble shepherd crooks or staffs. This story may or may not be true as it cannot really be verified.
