Measuring 19 1/8 x 14 inches (48.6 x 35.6 cm), this work is part of the American Art collection at the Saint Louis Art Museum, gifted by Lyle S. and Aileen E. Woodcock. The painting depicts towering redwood trees in California, with the sun setting just below the horizon, casting long shadows and illuminating the sky with bright warm tones. The composition centres on three strong redwoods in the foreground, framed by dense shrubbery and a rising mountain face in the background. This piece is somewhat unusual for Bierstadt, as he places tall trees centrally rather than at the sides, suggesting experimentation with composition.
