Pocking eggs is a very old French tradition that was carried to North America when the Frech settled what is now Canada. When the Acadians were exiled from Nova Scotia for refusing to pledge fealty to the English, they carried the tradition to south Louisiana where is thrives today. The work comes from Paques, the French word for Easter. In Avoyelles Parish there is an annual contest where people would try to gain an advantage any way they could. One such trick was to use Guinea eggs as they were supposedly harder than chicken eggs. This, of course, earns you a disqualification! People would cultivate certain breeds of chickens and feed them special diets all year long to make their shells stronger. Pocking eggs symbolizes the end of lent and the winner of an egg pocking contest purportedly has good luck all year long.
