This design was created with reference to the "Ageha-cho crest pattern diagram and training text" found in "Kyoto Crest Uwa-e-shi" in "Japan Crest Grand Illustrated Book" (March 28, 2013). "Fusadate" refers to a state where the wings are held horizontally, whereas "Ageha-cho" refers to a state where the wings are raised and stopped. The "Ageha-cho" that appears in family crests is generally not the same as the swallowtail butterfly commonly known. It was surprising to learn that the Ageha-cho in patterns and the swallowtail butterfly in biology are different. It was also surprising to discover that the name of the pattern is distinguished by whether the wings are raised or lowered. (From "Exploring Family Crests" by Keiichi Morimoto)
