Grand Place (Grote Mark), Brussels, Belgium The Grand Place is the centre of the downtown of Brussels and it's one of the symbols of the city. A Grand Place is World Heritage Site of the UNESCO. It's a market place since the 12th century, but only at the beginning of the 16th century gaint its present day quadrangular form. The place was destroyed by cannons of the France artillery in 1695. The rich and proud guilds rebuilt their palaces in four years. Until 1959 it was a marketplace. In 1998 it gained the UNESCO World Heritage Site title. Summer nights the place has a sound and light show, but the everynight lights are also exceptional. címet. Every pair year in August the old cobblestones are covered with a floral carpet.
