Bouguereau Pieta plaque. Oil painting on canvas from 1876. Neoclassicist William Bouguereau regularly drew inspiration from religious themes. His Pieta is his most famous and celebrated religious painting. Featuring the Virgin Mary holding the body of the crucified Jesus Christ, the painting is both moving and captivating. The Virgir looks forward as halos surround the heads of both her and her son. A chorus of mourning angels weep and grieve about her. At her feet sit the crown of thorns and a bronze bathing dish.
