Bonaparte in Jaffa Poster
Napoleon Bonaparte in Jaffa - By Antoine-Jean Gros
Napoleon's visit to the plague ward in Jaffa in 1799 is a noteable episode that took place during the Egyptian campaign of the French Revolutionary Wars. As Napoleon's forces advanced through the Middle East, they encountered an outbreak of bubonic plague in the city of Jaffa (modern-day Tel Aviv, Israel). Facing the challenge of maintaining morale among his troops while dealing with the spread of the deadly disease, Napoleon made a strategic decision to personally visit the plague-stricken soldiers in the military hospital. This visit, depicted famously in the painting "Bonaparte Visiting the Plague Victims of Jaffa" by Antoine-Jean Gros, served both military and propaganda purposes.
During his visit, Napoleon displayed an act of apparent compassion by touching and comforting infected soldiers, a gesture intended to boost the morale of his troops and project an image of leadership and fearlessness. The scene, as depicted by Gros, presents Napoleon as a heroic and empathetic figure. However, historians debate the authenticity of this portrayal, as some argue that Napoleon's visit had a dual motive of using the opportunity to convince his soldiers that the plague was not as deadly as they believed, and therefore, they should not be deterred in their campaign. Regardless of the interpretation, the visit to the plague ward in Jaffa became a symbol in both contemporary and historical accounts, illustrating the challenges of military leadership in the face of disease and the complex intersection of political strategy and humanitarian concerns in Napoleon's military campaigns.

I hung this in the stairwell of our house, near some other Renoir pictures. My daughter says it looks like she is looking at her when she walks up the stairs.
it's called "The Excursionist", she is holding a walking stick. Renoir was an impressionist, I don't think this is an actual person. The finished framed picture arrived and looks better than the online pic - Beautiful!

Absolutely superb Art Deco poster. The colours are vibrant, sympathetic to the era and perfect for use. I framed it and hung above the entrance to my Art Deco inspired lounge room. Stunning! The print is precise, clear and of an excellent standard. It was cleverly packaged so there wasn’t a blemish or crease. Perfect!
