Cusco, sitting at an elevation of 11,200 feet (3,400 metres), is the capital of the Cusco Region as well as the Cuzco Province. Its population is almost half a million people. Cusco was the site of the historic capital of the Inca Empire. UNESCO named Cusco a World Heritage Site in 1983. It is designated as the Historical Capital of Peru by the Constitution of Peru. Two million people visit Cusco every year. Cusco is a city in southeastern Peru, near the Urubamba Valley of the Andes mountain range. Another spelling is Cuzco.
