【Koibumi】Fumimon The word 'fumi' (文) means 'letter'. Although letters are now put in envelopes, in the past, paper was tied together. Therefore, in Fumimon, the shape of the tied letter is used as a crest design. The basic letter shape is often made by folding a long, thin paper in half and tying it in the middle to form a dumpling-like or 'ku' shape. Some designs, like the 'Koibumi-mon', also feature a kanzashi (hairpin). (From 'The Complete Guide to Kamon' by Takasawa, etc.)
