Birmingham and Liverpool Canal UK Waterways Red Tea Towel
Birmingham and Liverpool Canal Route Map UK Waterways Red. The Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal was completed in 1835 by its engineer, Thomas Telford. Its purpose was to link the Port of Liverpool in the north with the industrial Midlands. The canal is 39 miles in length and contains 26 locks and until the mid 1960’s was carrying oil and metal products to and from Ellesmere Port and the Midlands. It connects with the Staffordshire and Worcester Canal in the south at Autherley Junction (Wolverhampton) and joins the Chester Canal in the north at Nantwich, forming part of the ‘Four Counties Ring’. Today this canal is a rural haven for leisure users.
