About This Design

Bird Vices Tote

Bird Vices Tote

This design features common backyard birds and their respective habits that make them less-than-savory friends. You can read the quick explanations below: Womanizer - Red-winged Blackbird: The males in this species are known to have harems of up to 15 different females (the ladies aren't really faithful, however). Show-off - Northern Cardinal: The bright male will designate its territory and sign his heart out, flashing his brilliant colour. Both his song and plumage are so terrific you can't help but feel he is all about boasting. Destructive - House Wren: A tiny bird, but not to be underestimated. These wrens have been known to sabotage the nests of competitors and of other species, including pecking at any eggs they may find. Bully - House Sparrow: These birds may be cute, but they are extremely aggressive. The meanest will usurp an occupied nest by killing the parent(s) with a few pecks to the back of the neck, dispatching the rival quite easily with their powerful beak. Parasite - Brown-headed Cowbird: The female in this innocuous species will lay her egg in the nest of other species, avoiding any parental commitments until the next breeding season. Loudmouth - Steller's Jay: Jays, while beautiful, have extremely loud and grating calls that are not attractive at all. Downer - Mourning Dove: This dove gets its name from its forlorn cooing, which makes us all sad. Belligerent - Rufous Hummingbird: The smallest bird featured here, but perhaps the most pugnacious. Hummers often attack and chase each other for territory and are not afraid to dive-bomb predators several times their size, such as hawks. Freeloader - European Starling: These birds are an invasive species and will eat whatever they can get their beak on, foraging with other species to maximise their opportunities. Note: This is not meant to disparage birds, I just intended it as a fun way to get to know their less glamourous behaviours.
