Bigi Pan Nature Reserve Suriname Postcard

Bigi Pan is a vast coastal wetland and lagoon system in northwestern Suriname, famous for its incredible birdlife, particularly the striking scarlet ibis. The landscape is a mosaic of mangrove forests, open water, and mudflats that change with the seasons and the tides. It is a critical habitat for migratory birds travelling from North America, making it a world-class destination for birdwatching and nature photography. The reserve is best explored by boat, gliding through narrow channels where the roots of the mangroves create intricate, tangled patterns in the brackish water. At sunset, the sky and water often turn shades of pink and orange, mirroring the plumage of the birds that gather in the trees to roost. It is a tranquil, expansive environment where the boundary between sky and water seems to disappear into the horizon.
