The Green Man is a mystical figure in pagan and Celtic traditions, representing the cyclical renewal and rebirth of nature. He is often depicted as a horned, leafy figure, symbolising the explosive growth and fertility of the earth during spring. As the embodiment of the earth's revitalisation, the Green Man is closely tied to the ancient Celtic festival of Beltaine, celebrated on 1 May. This enigmatic character is often depicted as a male figure, usually with leaves, vines, or foliage for hair, and sometimes his face or body is also covered with leaves or greenery. He may be depicted in various guises, such as a horned figure, a figure sprouting leaves from his mouth or nose, or as a more sinister character with a grotesque face. During Beltaine, the Green Man was honoured through rituals and ceremonies, including the Maypole dance, which symbolised the union of masculine and feminine energies. His presence was believed to facilitate this union, ensuring the fertility of the land and the people.
