Battle of Spotsylvania Poster

Battle of Spotsylvania Poster

The Battle of Spotsylvania, fought from May 8 to May 21, 1864, during the American Civil War, was a critical engagement between the Union Army of the Potomac, led by Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant, and the Southern Army of Northern Virginia, commanded by General Robert E. Lee. The battle was part of Grant's Overland Campaign, a series of brutal clashes aimed at bringing the war to a decisive conclusion. The Southern forces entrenched themselves at Spotsylvania Court House, constructing an elaborate network of defensive earthworks to withstand the Union assault. The Southern troops, under Lee's strategic direction, fought fiercely to maintain their positions, resulting in intense hand-to-hand combat at various points along the front. One of the most infamous episodes of the battle was the struggle at the "Bloody Angle," a salient in the Southern defenses where Union and Southern forces clashed in close-quarters combat for nearly 24 hours. The Battle of Spotsylvania proved to be one of the most grueling and costly engagements of the Overland Campaign, with both the Union and Southern armies suffering heavy casualties. Despite the high cost and the absence of a clear victor, the Battle of Spotsylvania demonstrated the determination and resilience of both the Union and Southern forces. The Southern Army's ability to repel the Union assaults prolonged the war, but the relentless pressure exerted by Grant's forces set the stage for further confrontations. The Battle of Spotsylvania remains a testament to the brutal nature of the Civil War and the challenges faced by both the Union and Southern armies as they sought to achieve their respective objectives on the battlefield.

I hung this in the stairwell of our house, near some other Renoir pictures. My daughter says it looks like she is looking at her when she walks up the stairs. it's called "The Excursionist", she is holding a walking stick. Renoir was an impressionist, I don't think this is an actual person. The finished framed picture arrived and looks better than the online pic - Beautiful!

Absolutely superb Art Deco poster. The colours are vibrant, sympathetic to the era and perfect for use. I framed it and hung above the entrance to my Art Deco inspired lounge room. Stunning! The print is precise, clear and of an excellent standard. It was cleverly packaged so there wasn’t a blemish or crease. Perfect!
