Battle of Santiago, Cuba Poster

Battle of Santiago, Cuba Poster

The naval Battle of Santiago, a critical confrontation during the Spanish-American War, occurred on July 3, 1898, off the coast of Santiago de Cuba. It was a pivotal moment in the war, as it resulted in the destruction of the Spanish fleet and effectively ended Spain's ability to continue the conflict. Commodore George Dewey's earlier victory at Manila Bay had already demonstrated American naval prowess in the Pacific, and now, in the Atlantic, Rear Admiral William T. Sampson and Commodore Winfield Scott Schley commanded the American North Atlantic Squadron, facing off against Admiral Pascual Cervera's Spanish fleet. The battle began when the American forces spotted the Spanish fleet attempting to escape the blockade of Santiago Harbour. A fierce naval engagement followed, with American ships focusing their fire on the Spanish vessels. The Spanish fleet was overwhelmed, and within a few hours, all of its major warships had been either sunk or forced to run aground. Admiral Cervera's attempt to break out of the blockade ended in disaster, effectively ending Spain's naval threat in the Caribbean. The victory at the Battle of Santiago was a key factor in the eventual American triumph in the war, leading to the capture of Santiago de Cuba and contributing to the Treaty of Paris in December 1898, which formally ended the conflict and marked the beginning of the United States' emergence as a global power.

I hung this in the stairwell of our house, near some other Renoir pictures. My daughter says it looks like she is looking at her when she walks up the stairs. it's called "The Excursionist", she is holding a walking stick. Renoir was an impressionist, I don't think this is an actual person. The finished framed picture arrived and looks better than the online pic - Beautiful!

Absolutely superb Art Deco poster. The colours are vibrant, sympathetic to the era and perfect for use. I framed it and hung above the entrance to my Art Deco inspired lounge room. Stunning! The print is precise, clear and of an excellent standard. It was cleverly packaged so there wasn’t a blemish or crease. Perfect!
