The Battle of Nashville, which took place from December 15 to 16, 1864, during the American Civil War, was a pivotal engagement in the Western Theatre. It was fought between the Union Army of the Cumberland, commanded by Major General George H. Thomas, and the Southern Army of Tennessee, led by General John Bell Hood. Hood's Southern forces had embarked on an ill-fated campaign to disrupt Union supply lines and retake control of Tennessee. However, Thomas skilfully organised his Union forces, and the battle began on December 15 when his troops attacked Hood's men south of Nashville. Over the next two days, the Union forces decisively defeated Hood's army, forcing it to retreat southward. The Battle of Nashville effectively ended Confederate military operations in the Western Theatre, solidifying Union control over Tennessee and contributing to the ultimate Union victory in the Civil War.
