Bartolomeo Veneto Lady playing a lute CC1160 Postcard

Postcard inspired by a painting by Italian Renaissance artist Bartolomeo Veneto (Lady playing a lute, about 1530). The picture shows a lovely young woman playing a lute and turning to the viewer with a sidelong glance. There are some similarities between Veneto's lutenist and the female models of Leonardo da Vinci (for example the enigmatic expression and the dead ermine that is draped across the crook of her arm) and in the nineteenth century the painting was actually ascribed to him. The dead ermine, by the way, was called a flea pelt and was thought to protect against fleas. It was frequently worn by high-ranking women in the sixteenth century.
