Balinese Rice Field Shrines Poster

The Balinese believe they are surrounded by gods and spirits everywhere they go. Fields, large trees, vehicles, bodies of water and basically any place with any possible significance has a being that enjoys being acknowledged. From their happy way about them, most Balinese seem to feel they are in harmony with those beings. Balinese daily routine includes multiple times in a day when little offerings are made to the shrines in their personal space. I've seen many different kinds of shrines in fields. Here you can see two -- possibly an old and an newer one. The light is slightly subdued because of the cloud cover. One thing I really like about this shot is the way it captures the Balinese world view and the elements are highly symbolic. You have the older and newer shrine which symbolises the timeless continuity of their beliefs. And you have the rain filled clouds and the very green fertile fields that come as a result of the Balinese harmony with the animistic spiritual world they believe they live in.
