Backyard Satsuma is one in a series of still life portraits of fruit picked from the yards of family and friends. These Satsuma Mandarin oranges are from the tree in the backyard of my Aunt Helen and Uncle Ken Kurakazu in Walnut Creek, CA. The fruit’s name comes from the region of Kyushu, Japan – Satsuma, where this type of orange became known. The original photograph was rendered into a digital “block” painting – a modern, minimalist study that celebrates the beauty and nature of this succulent homegrown fruit. The back of the card features actual Nutrition Facts that includes its 100% Intangible Value based on daily gratification.
