Adapted from an anonymous graphite engraving showing Jacques Alexander César Charles and Nicolas-Luis Robert standing in their hydrogen-filled “globe” balloon waving flags as they begin their ascent from the Tuileries Gardens in Paris on December 1, 1783. The Palace of Versailles serves as a dramatic background for this historic event. In the foreground thousands of spectators gather to witness the first manned gas balloon flight.
