Azaleas Chilton-Lipstate-Taylor House Tyler Texas Postcard

A black wrought iron gate opens to a path leading to the historic Chilton-Lipstate-Taylor House in Tyler, Texas. Gorgeous blooming azaleas line the fence line and the white-columned porch. Tyler is renowned for its annual Azalea and Spring Flower Trail every spring. Built as a family home by Horace and Mary (Grinnan) Chilton, the house was completed in 1888. The high style classical revival house is the largest house in the Brick Streets Historic District and reflects late 19th century development in Smith County, Texas. The house is reportedly modeled after Mary's childhood home in Virginia. Features include steeply pitched hipped roof, ionic columns, a cantilevered balcony, turned wood balusters and first floor window surrounds. After Chilton moved his law practice to Beaumont in 1902, the house had a series of owners, including Jack Lipstate and Gus Taylor. The current owners renovated the house, which is now the headquarters of their company. The house is in the Brick Streets Neighborhood Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004; and was added to the Recorded Texas Historic Landmark list in 2014.
