Aruba's national flag was adopted on March 18, 1976. The design consists of a field of light blue (called "Larkspur"), two narrow parallel horizontal yellow ("Bunting Yellow") stripes in the bottom half, and a four-pointed white-fimbriated red ("Union Flag red") star in the canton. The flag was designed in part by vexillologist Whitney Smith. March 18 is a public holiday in Aruba, known as the National Anthem National anthem of Aruba and Flag Day Flag of Aruba and it is celebrated through local events all scattered across the island. It is also considered the same day the Netherlands accepted Aruba’s right to an autonomous status in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
