Fleet vessels of War Argentinian Navy Samuel Walters 1874 Original painting is dated between circa 1874 and circa 1875 The Argentine Navy has been under-funded and only 15 of its 42 vessels are in a condition to sail. As of 2017, there were 41 commissioned ships in the navy, including 4 destroyers, 2 amphibious support ships, and 2 submarines. The Argentine Navy day is celebrated on May 17, the anniversary of the victory in 1814 at the Battle of Montevideo over the Spanish fleet during the war of Independence. The Argentine military was swept from power in 1983 after losing its only cruiser and 750 lives in the Falklands War. The Argentine cruiser ARA General Belgrano was shot by a British naval submarine on 2 May 1982, resulting in the deaths of 323 people.
