It is known in Arabic as khatt (خط), which derived from the word 'line', 'design', or 'construction'. Suspicion of figurative art as idolatrous led calligraphy and abstract depictions to become a major form of artistic expression in Islamic cultures, particularly in religious contexts. Due to its deep association with writing and preserving the Qur'an, calligraphy is highly esteemed among other forms of visual Islamic art.
